I would like to submit the following letter as a template for everyone to send to their representatives in Congress. The more they hear from us, the better the chance that they will pay attention. Please feel free to cut and paste the letter below.
Bill, please review this and let me know if you want to make any changes.
Dear Representative ________________________
The United States Senate has passed the Patient Access to Durable Medical Equipment (PADME) Act! This incredibly important legislation is a giant step in protecting many millions of Americans from the possibilities of shortages in oxygen and oxygen equipment.
It is difficult to believe that our elected representatives would even consider cutting that portion of reimbursement for DME (Durable Medical Equipment) that deals with the only medicine that can treat or relieve the terrible shortness of breath that accompanies the roughly 30 million people in the United States who suffer from Emphysema. Supplemental oxygen is medicine, subject to prescription, and is only available from qualified suppliers.
Unfortunately, since the cuts in DME reimbursements in the last few years, a large percentage of the oxygen suppliers have been driven out of business due to the inability to remain profitable. This has left a disturbing number of oxygen-dependent patients with inadequate, or even more frighteningly, no source for the very thing that is keeping them alive.
If the House of Representatives does not pass the PADME bill, you will, at best, be sentencing millions of lung disease patients to the life of a hermit, living without adequate oxygen to leave their homes.
At worst, you will be sentencing them to death.
Please do whatever you can to pass this incredibly important bill. You will be saving the lives of many of your constituants, and allowing many others to experience a decent quality of life.
Thank you so much for your consideration.
