No doctor told me, even in diagnosing COPD in that 5 to 10 minute quick appointment. Add to smoking (quit in 1978), a more recent decade of heating my house daily in cool weather with a wood stove. And keeping the air filled with mineral dust from a humidifier in each room (the fine water droplets go out and something is left behind). If you’ve ever seen the big cloud of white dust in a stream of sunlight when taking a tissue out of the box, or breaking off toilet paper from the roll you’d know - a lifetime of that. We are constantly breathing in fine “dusts” that can greatly harm us. Think of lung disease from workers in cotton mills breathing white dust. We have modern day ways of assaulting our lungs, ones we never think about and no one warns us. I don’t think my long ago smoking is the big cause of my problem, add in everything else for a tipping point to having problems.
