Return to all articles Return to previous page Managing comorbidities in COPD Resource Type: Research Papers 1 Comments This article provides an overview of the most common COPD comorbidities and guideline-based treatment approaches. Respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, mental and other comorbidities (i.e., GERD, OSA, chronic renal failure) are addressed. The authors offer ways in which COPD and comorbidities may be linked (e.g., risk factors, underlying pathogenesis, medications taken for COPD exacerbating other conditions). A short discussion of the considerable cost burden of COPD and its comorbidities is included; healthcare costs for COPD patients with comorbidities are 4.7 times that of those without other conditions. Use of COPD-specific comorbidity indices as part of ongoing risk assessment is suggested by the authors. View Resource Citation: Hillas G, Perlikos F, Tsiligianni I, Tzanakis N. Deb McGowan Great article and helpful in considering as we are building strategies and personalized intervention plans, for this COPD population. These factors influence utilization rates, quality of life, complication rates, and mortality. Developing guidelines specific to co-morbidity clusters is a critical focus for multi-disciplinary teams in moving toward personalized medicine. I am interested to hear how others are risk stratifying this population around clusters and how you are developing personalized action plans. Reply
