In this invited commentary, the author identifies and expounds upon two concerns regarding the use of early unplanned hospital readmissions as a health care quality indicator: 1) that many patient and hospitalization factors independent of care quality contribute to readmissions and 2) the accuracy in using these as a proxy for avoidable readmissions.
