My 16 month old son has low oxygen levels, especially when sleeping. He has had lots of investigation by the hospital and is on a trial of a penicillin for 4 weeks for lung infection - he is 14 days in.
We have oxygen at home and a monitor. It is Thursday today; on Tuesday we tried a nap with no oxygen to see how he was doing.. his o2 levels stayed around 94/5 for over an hour but then dipped low (to 83) once and then would bounce up to 90 again but once the first dip had come they were more recurring.
On Wednesday night his oxygen levels were around 97 for 3 hours before any dips.
Tonight (Thursday) his oxygen levels were low right away (87-89) so we put the 1l oxygen on with the probes which has brought him up to 98
What can cause these big fluctuations? There seems to be no consistency. Also, if the antibiotics were to be the answer, after 14 days would you not expect him to be having high oxygen saturations all the time?
They also noted a small PDA on his echocardiogram, could this cause the intermittent low levels? Or would they be consistently low if this were the cause
