I'll have to keep the time difference in mind Bob, and yes this site feels slicker than the other one, which I felt was somewhat dated.
For one I can post a mug shot with ease, which is important to me because I like people to see who they are chatting to, and I also like to see who I'm chatting to.
I haven't had that much of a look around yet, but that will come. Keith4 years ago

I think I know what you mean. I feel it as heavy air and more difficult to take in. As 2cents said it feels thick. I find it harder to breathe outside in the Texas summer because of the humidity which feels thick and heavy to me.

Just diagnoised with emphysema, they only did a chest xray, doctor said since im not having any issues just quit smoking, buy now I find myself having panic attacks, and does this cause rib pain?  Im only 38

  • das23Hi Amanda 521.... Welcome. I would suggest seeing a Pulmonologist. A chest x-ray isn't enough for a complete diagnosis.  I was just a little older than you when I was first told I had a "little" COPD. I wish I saw the Pulmonologist then. You don't need to be afraid. You're still young and can keep it from progressing or at least slow the progression down. BUT. You NEED to QUIT SMOKING. With the proper care you should have a long, active healthy life. You will lots of support here. Good Luck4 years ago

Hi All!
Im new to this site. My mother is 57 years old and was diagnosed with emphysema at 34.  She stopped smoking immediately and things had been okay for years. Obviously, she had some bad instances of "asthmatic" flare ups (as the doctors would classify them) and then eventually was put on meds for her breathing issues. Recently her COPD/emphysema has been taking a turn for the worse and my grandmother died of this disease at 58, so its a bit scary.
Since THIS February, she has been hospitalized for pneumonia and sepsis FIVE TIMES. She just went back today for that 5th time.  Her pulmonologist is the only in the area and is awful to her. She tells her she is fine and refuses to categorize her COPD as severe and tells her that she is overweight and this is why this keeps happening. Lets keep in mind my mother is barely overweight and yes she is not "fit" but this is clearly her lungs giving up on her. Each time this happens, she is rushed from her primary care or an urgent care center to the hospital and this last time, she was lucky she made it to the hospital in time as lactic acid levels in her system were almost fatal. She was kept in the hospital 6 days and then sent home again. The pulmonologist again... said she was "fine", her lungs are clear and was going to send her back to work the next week. She can not even walk to the bathroom without complete exhaustion. This afternoon I receive a message from my mother that she is back in the hospital again with pneumonia and has gone septic again!
So, I guess where I am going with this, is what would you do if this was your mother? I am a mom of three very young children but trying to help my mom out the best I can. I feel like there has to be some sort of advocating I can do for her but I know nothing about COPD and how to approach any of this. Especially since its not like I am her mother and can attend her doctors appointments with her to make sure she is being treated right.&nbs

Jimmy S. California State Captain

Jimmy S. California State Captain Back to HOT weather here in northern California. ๐Ÿ˜ŸFor people with the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), summer heat is not only uncomfortable, it can lead to dangerous complications. Extreme heat and humidity can worsen COPD symptoms, including shortness of breath and bronchospasms. The body is always working to try to maintain a normal body temperature,
which is about 98.6 degrees F. When we are exposed to extreme weather
conditions, such as during the heat of summer, the body must expend
extra energy to try to cool itself down in order to maintain a normal
body temperature. This extra energy requirement causes the body to demand more oxygen. If
you have COPD, you are already using much of your energy just to
breathe, not to mention everything else that you do during the day. So
itโ€™s not uncommon to experience a greater level of shortness of breath
when you are exposed to extreme temperatures. Your body is being forced
to use more energy while it struggles to maintain your body temperature. So try to: Wear Appropriate Clothing and Sunscreen, Plan Your Activities Carefully, Stay Cool, Use the Buddy System, Avoid Excess Activity, Take Your Medications as Directed, and Pay Attention to Weather Reports.๐Ÿ˜ŽSummertime can be a wonderful time to increase your time outside and
exercise, both important for your quality of life. Yet taking a moment
to consider safety in the heat and humidity is paramount. Keep in mind
that your fluid needs can increase dramatically with heat, and
dehydration can occur rapidly. Taking the few simple steps above may
help you enjoy these months of summer to the fullest.๐Ÿ˜Ž  Have a nice day and even better week.

Hello everyone!
I read my (new) lung doctors notes online and it said stage 3.  When I was in the hospital, an elderly doctor said to a nurse, "there are 4 stages to COPD and she's in 5 !!"  He thought I was asleep... That has depressed me for the month I've been out of the hospital until today.  I have bounced back stronger than ever.  Only sleeping with oxygen at night.  I'll take stage 3.   I'd like to punch that other doctor right in the nose hahaha. Guess I showed him.
Have a wonderful day all!!

Hi everyone, I had a doctors appointment a few days ago & not a pleasant one.  The doctor listen to my heart & lungs then asked if we could do some tests.  I started to protest but he stopped me before I could say to much & he said its very important....(if I had it to do over I would have said NO).  They drew about a gallon of blood (it felt like that...lol)...Xrays, EKG & a few more things.  After& an hour wait, he walk back into the room with a worried look on his face (and I thought this is not going to be good news) & I was right.  He passed me all the test results, I reviewed them all & I knew what he was going to say....I said END STAGE & he quietly shook his head yes....I think he took it worse than I did.  We all know that news is coming sooner or later....right???...I have put up a valiant fight all these years & will continue to fight until my last breath.....I will be here as long as God wants me to be here.  PLEASE DO NOT SAY YOUR SORRY, I DO NOT WANT PITY.  I may be around for years yet !!!!!!!

I was introduce to a new church last week and i was able with Gods willing to go again yesterday. So remember: โ€œDon't let yesterday take up too much of today.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜Ž 1. Remember to take your medications this morning. 2. Try to stay hydrated best you can. 3. Pace yourself, slow wins the race with our disease. 4. Practice your pursed-lip breathing 5. Exercise best you can. 6. REST WHEN YOU GET TIRED. 7. Have a nice day and breathe easy my friend. ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ™
