What does taking medications do? Does it slow progression of COPD; is it for relief of symptoms? I will be going for a spirometry test soon -- my first one was done almost 2 yrs ago. My FEV1 was 71% at the time. My new pulmonologist said that even though I don't have any real symptoms that she might want to put me on meds if my FEV1 has decreased. I have an emergency inhaler which I have never needed to use. Why would I need to take something if I don't have any real symptoms? I take BP meds, thyroid meds, and an antidepressant. I also have mitral valve prolapse and a lot of meds affect that especially albuterol. I' m afraid of side effects and don't want to take something I don't really need yet. Thanks for any advice.
