Holidays and celebrations are a time to get together with friends and loved ones to share special meals, exchange gifts, and be inspired by the meaning of the season.
But right now it’s different. Much different. We’re in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. How do we possibly have happy celebrations or joyful holidays when many of the best things about it are beyond our reach?
Well, in order to answer that, let’s take a minute to think about our most favorite aspects of these gatherings and see, if somehow, we can make adjustments so we can find a way to still be a part of them.
I love to cook for my family, especially around the holidays. In fact, it’s something my husband and kids joke about – that I always make too many different dishes and too much of each. But to me, cooking is love. This year we didn’t get together for Thanksgiving, so I made my family’s two favorite casseroles (in smaller amounts) and gave them to our adult children and their families. This way they could enjoy eating something I made, and I could still enjoy making it for them. Now, is cooking a couple casseroles going to make my family’s holiday season the same it has been in past years? No. Definitely not. But something is better than nothing. And sometimes that “something” is simply all we’ve got. And we will make it through… to better times ahead. We will.
What’s your favorite, or most meaningful part of gathering together for holidays and celebrations? Can you modify it to still be a part of it in some way? I look forward to hearing from you!
