Hi. I was diagnosed with severe emphysema (with air trapping and co2 retention) last November after a nasty bout of bronchitis. It took me almost 3 months to see a pulmonologist who ordered PFT test. I also had a sleep study done that was considered a poor test at home and I just had an in hospital sleep test done a couple of weeks ago whereby my pulmonologist ordered a CPAP machine. My question is, is it normal to see your pulmonologist every four months while you’re getting some kind of plan going? My main concern is that according to my blood gas test (I have had three since my hospitalization) and it shows my CO2 levels going up every test I have and now it’s over 60 and my pH level is just over the normal range toward the acidic my pulmonologist doesn’t seem to be concerned with the gradual increase in my CO2. I begged him for two months to allow me to attend pulmonary rehab, which I just finished and I guess I had an improvement there. i’m not on any oxygen. I’m able to function just fine in my life at this point other than getting winded with exertion quite often, but my oxygen levels stay up in the high 90s with the exception of my deep sleep where it bottoms out, I feel quite dismissed by my primary and my pulmonologist over my concerns, especially on the CPAP machine, which is set to automatically blow between four and 12. I haven’t been able to sleep with it on yet although I’ve only had it two days and I have tried, but I’m comfortable at four and it shows my oxygen steady at four but when it blows up to 12, it almost blows my mask off and it hurt me my chest real bad and my nose would get plugged up, but my pulmonologist isn’t doesn’t seem concerned. I am in a rural area and the pulmonologist I see is only here every six weeks for a week. He rotates around the state. Other than my COPD, my health is otherwise ok. No meds. Any thoughts?
