In the United States, on the fourth Thursday in November, we celebrate Thanksgiving – a day of family and feasting and expressing thanks for what we have. But Thanksgiving should not have to be on a calendar for us to focus on being thankful. We can remind ourselves to think about thankfulness every day.
If you have COPD, it might be hard sometimes to feel thankful. You may be experiencing changes in your everyday life that put limitations on you and cause the loss of what you were once able to do. On the other hand, you might be finding a new appreciation for good days and easier breathing because you are now aware of those bad days. However, with changes in your lifestyle you may actually be finding new opportunities: a chance to slow down, notice things you never noticed before, learn new things, meet new people, and even have an opportunity to help others.
My colleague at the COPD Foundation, Kristen Willard, talked about gratitude here in July. She said it was becoming more common for people to write down what they were grateful for. Those who did felt that it improved their moods, helped them not fret so much over minor issues, and kept their everyday life focused in a positive way. She told us that studies have found that thankful thinking improved mood and relationships, among other very positive findings. It’s especially interesting that people tended to start focusing on this when they were going through more difficult, challenging times – when they were hoping for brighter days.
In some ways, this past summer seems like a long time ago. So, let’s focus on thankfulness again. Personally, I’d like to say that I am thankful for this caring community and each one of you here. I appreciate your participation. Still, I know that there are many of you out there who we don't hear from, but you visit often and find information, inspiration, and encouragement. We are thankful for you too!
Starting today, jot down something you are thankful for each day. Then, if you want, we’d love to have you share your list with us here next week.
Thank you, all. I look forward to hearing from you!
