I started looking into smoke filters and air purifiers for a pretty personal reason. Someone close to me has COPD and is still smoking, and although quitting is something he has to work through himself, I’ve been trying to make the environment around him a little better.
The part I find difficult is that cigarette smoke doesn't just stay where the person is sitting. The smell travels, smoke gets into the surrounding air, and it can linger even after the cigarette is gone. Since COPD is already part of the picture, I didn't want to just cover up the smell with an air freshener and call it a day.
I originally thought a large HEPA air purifier would be the obvious answer. I looked at a few of the popular models for larger rooms, including the PuroAir 400 and LEVOIT Core 400S-P. Both have features that make sense for general indoor air filtration.
But then I came across something I hadn't really considered before: VEIL.

What made VEIL different for me is that it isn't trying to clean the entire room after smoke has already spread through it.
It is a personal smoke filter that works much closer to the source. That seems like a pretty practical idea when the main problem you're trying to deal with is smoke itself.
VEIL uses a multi-stage filtration system and has a replaceable cartridge. It also has an aluminum body and is designed for relatively easy airflow.
I particularly like the idea of dealing with smoke at the source instead of relying entirely on a room purifier to catch it later.
I'm not saying it eliminates secondhand smoke or makes smoking indoors safe. It doesn't. With someone who has COPD, I think it's important to be realistic about that. The safest option is still to keep cigarette smoke out of the home altogether.
But when you're dealing with a situation where quitting hasn't happened yet, I'm interested in anything that can help reduce the amount of smoke getting into the surrounding space.
Where the regular air purifiers come in
I haven't ruled out using a normal air purifier too.
The PuroAir 400 is geared toward larger rooms, so it could make sense for someone trying to filter the air in a living room or open area.
The LEVOIT Core 400S-P is another interesting option, particularly for someone who wants air-quality monitoring and smart controls along with room filtration.
The thing I'm realizing is that these products aren't really solving the exact same problem.
A room purifier deals with the air after pollutants are already circulating. A personal smoke filter is more about reducing what gets released into that air to begin with.
That's why VEIL has ended up at the top of my list.
What I'd actually want to know from other people
I'm less interested in whether a product has a long list of features and more interested in what it's like to use one every day.
Does it actually make a noticeable difference with cigarette smoke?
How well does it handle the smell?
Does the filter last a reasonable amount of time?
Is it something a smoker will realistically keep using?
Those seem like much more useful questions than simply looking at the maximum room size on a product page.
For now, VEIL is the first option I'm considering, with a room air purifier as a possible second layer of filtration.
If anyone has used VEIL, PuroAir, LEVOIT, or another smoke filtration setup in a home where someone smokes, I'd genuinely appreciate hearing what worked for you and what didn't. I'm mainly trying to figure out what actually makes a difference in real life, especially when you're trying to reduce smoke exposure for someone living with COPD.
