I'm in final (end stage) COPD with severe emphysema. I'm on O2 24/7 @ 5 LPM and use a Bi-Pap machine at night due to high CO2 retention issues along with inhalers and a nebulizer. I was initially diagnosed in Sept 2012 forcing me into retirement and have had multiple exacerbation ER trips and several hospitalizations since then. But I do consider myself lucky in that COPD is the only medical issue I have. No diabetes, heart problems, blood pressure issues, weight problems, etc. I am cared for by the VA and contrary to what you may have heard, have had excellent care. I have been approved for lung transplant through the VA but, being single, I am unable to provide a 24/7 care giver who can be available to stay with me pre- and post- operation (during recovery) which is required by the VA. Does anyone know of a source I can contact to find volunteers who provide such a service?
