Bronchiectasis and NTM Association joins leading lung health organizations for third annual World NTM Awareness Day
Miami (July 31, 2025) - The Bronchiectasis and NTM Association joins other global patient advocacy organizations, professional societies, and lung health experts for the third annual World NTM Awareness Day on Monday, August 4, 2025.
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are naturally occurring bacteria in the environment, commonly found in soil and natural and treated water. While NTM can affect anyone's lungs, those with suppressed immune systems, bronchiectasis, or other pulmonary diseases are particularly vulnerable.
NTM lung disease causes a buildup of excess mucus in a person's airways, which can cause widening and scarring that make it difficult to clear mucus. It is estimated that more than 200,000 people in the United States have NTM lung disease. That number is increasing approximately 8% every year.
World NTM Awareness Day, established by NTM Info & Research, is a global effort to raise awareness and improve education and access to care for those affected by NTM lung disease. The Bronchiectasis and NTM Association supports the NTM lung disease community with a range of tools and resources, including an NTM info sheet and NTM Management Tool, expert-led educational videos, and an active online community.
In recognition of World NTM Awareness Day, the Bronchiectasis and NTM Association's latest podcast episode focuses on the unique challenges of traveling with NTM lung disease. Through a conversation between John and Nancy, two people living with NTM lung disease, listeners learn steps and things to consider when traveling with this chronic lung condition.
