Caregiver’s Information Line

The COPD Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new information line, dedicated to the caregivers of individuals with COPD. The COPD Caregiver’s Information Line offers support for the caregiver seeking information, assistance, or even just a talk with a fellow caregiver. Expanding on the work already begun by the COPD-International’s Internet Caregiver’s Forum, the new information line takes the concept a step further, offering numerous resources to its callers in their quest to provide quality care for their loved ones.

Fulfilling the Need

The need to create a special hotline for caregivers was first noted through the calls that were received by the C.O.P.D. Information Line. “When we organized the C.O.P.D. Information Line,” states Bill Clark, Manager of the C.O.P.D. Information Line, “it quickly became evident that there was a gap in our services. We were getting calls from the family members of COPDers wanting information on how best to fulfill their roles as caregivers.”

Agreeing with the obligation to address the needs of the COPD caregiver community, an Organizational Committee developed, headed by Diane Walsh. “Too often we have focused on the individual with COPD, and have not looked to the needs of those caring for the individual,” states Diane Walsh, Director of the Caregiver’s Information Line. “The caregiver’s task is not limited to just knowing about the various facets of the disease. The caregiver must also deal with the ramifications the disease has on the family. The caregiver is truly the glue that holds everything together.”

Education, encouragement, and empowerment are the three things that a caregiver can receive by calling the Caregiver’s Information Line.

Volunteer for the Caregiver’s Information Line

The Caregiver’s Information Line is presently looking for volunteer associates. If you are a present or former caregiver for an individual with COPD, have a high-speed Internet connection and Windows XP, and can volunteer to offer help to other caregivers a few hours each week, call the Caregiver’s Information Line at 1-866-316-COPD (2673) to find out how you can become a volunteer. Make a difference in the COPD community!
