COPD Treatments

There are a few treatments for people with COPD that help them breathe better:

Your doctor may give you medicine to take everyday. This medicine will help keep the airways in your lungs open. One medicine that does this is called a bronchodilator (bron-kaw-di-lay-ter). A bronchodilator is an inhaler—a medicine that you breathe into your lungs.

Your doctor may also give you oxygen treatment. In this case, you will have an oxygen concentrator or an oxygen gas canister in your home. These treatments will send oxygen directly into your lungs. Oxygen is sent through tubes that you place in your nose. This way, your lungs don’t have to work as hard to get oxygen.

For some patients, a doctor may recommend lung volume reduction surgery. A surgeon would take the sickest part of the lung out. Talk to your doctor to see if this is an option for you.

Also ask your doctor about pulmonary rehabilitation. Pulmonary rehabilitation is therapy that helps make your lungs stronger. It makes you less short of breath. Your lungs will be stronger by exercising. But it will teach you about COPD so you feel better and ready to face any challenge.
