What is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease—or COPD for short—is a word that describes lung diseases. Some lung diseases include emphysema, chronic bronchitis, refractory asthma, and severe bronchiectasis.

COPD is when the air passing in and out of the lungs through the airways (tubes) are partly blocked. This makes it harder for the person to breathe. COPD gets worse over time and the symptoms may get stronger, but there are ways of stopping the COPD from getting worse too quickly.
