Status of COPD Research

Research is the answer to solving the long-term problem of how to manage COPD. It serves to better the lives of COPD patients and their family members. Research will also lower the current cost burden of COPD to the U.S.

Through research, we will:

Save Money

  • COPD poses a large public health burden, costing the U.S. $31 billion a year.
  • Of the $31 billion per year, $15 billion is spent on direct health costs and $15.7 billion is spent on indirect costs such as lost wages.

Save Lives

  • COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the world.
  • Of the top 10 causes of death, COPD is the only one likely to increase in the next decade.
  • It is likely to be the third leading cause of death by 2020.

Improve the Quality of Life

  • Research will create better methods to manage COPD so as to help those who have the disease.

Invest in the Future

  • The health of the future depends on the findings of the research done today.
