A serious problem COPD patients face today is the limited quality care
they receive from their primary care physicians. According to a recent
needs assessment survey, a large percentage of physicians do not have
spirometers in their offices (devices used to diagnose COPD), in turn
causing a large number of COPD patients to be misdiagnosed. In order to
alleviate this problem, the COPD Foundation holds CME workshops for
doctors to learn how to improve diagnosis and treatment for their COPD
patients, as well as understanding disease progression, and other
important factors relating to the quality of care COPD patients need.
This past November, the COPD and Primary
Care: Treating the Whole Patient workshop addressed the issue of
co-morbidities, managing COPD in both outpatient and hospital settings,
current modalities in disease management, and the future of COPD
management.
